| Tasmiyah
refer to the sunnah of naming the baby. Honoring
the newborn with the gift of a graceful Islamic/Muslim
name is an important obligation as
well as great responsibility of Muslim parents.
Several hadith indicate that the Prophet Muhammad
(PBUH) used to name babies soon after performing
their tahnik..
Muslim Names
Since muslim names have lasting effects on
the bearer, parents should always give good
and virtuous muslim names to children. The
Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) urged in serval ahadith
to give good muslim names to children.
As he (PBUH) said in a famous hadith :
You would be called with your
names and your father’s names on the
Day of Judgment, so give good (graceful) names
to your children. (Abu Dawud)
There are several muslim names
that are dominating present Muslim generations
even though they hardly possess any good meaning,
spirit or Islamic values. The so-called modern,
fancy colorful and fashionable names are strange
and bear no relationship with Islam. Moreover
our ancestors have never used these names.
The new trend of naming children with strange
and faddish names has become so common, that
many traditional Islamic names are now approaching
extinction. The trend for naming girls with
fancy names is much more prevalent than with
boys.
